A respected and growing civil engineering and surveying firm is seeking a Principal Surveyor to lead its Survey Department. This is a unique leadership opportunity for a California Professional Land Surveyor who enjoys a blend of technical excellence, team leadership, client development, and strategic influence.
In this position, you'll oversee surveying operations, mentor and develop staff, maintain technical quality standards, and help drive business growth throughout California.
What You'll Do
- Lead and manage all survey operations from project kickoff through final delivery.
- Serve as Surveyor-in-Responsible-Charge for boundary, mapping, and surveying projects.
- Review, sign, and seal surveys, maps, legal descriptions, and related deliverables.
- Oversee quality assurance efforts and ensure compliance with California surveying regulations and ALTA/NSPS standards.
- Direct boundary analysis, survey calculations, and technical project reviews.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships while supporting business development and proposal efforts.
- Partner with leadership to support strategic planning, resource management, and department growth.
- Mentor, coach, and develop survey staff while fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture.
- Coordinate with public agencies, title companies, developers, and other stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.

- Legal Descriptions
- Subdivision Mapping
- Boundary Analysis and Resolution
What We're Looking For
- Active California Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license.
- Strong knowledge of California surveying laws, subdivision mapping, and boundary analysis.
- Experience serving in a leadership capacity within a surveying organization.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D and modern survey workflows.
- Demonstrated project management and client management experience.
- Business development experience and a desire to contribute to company growth.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and team-building skills.
