Principal Production Cost Modeling Engineer

Production Cost Modeling Engineer

Position Overview

A power systems consulting firm is seeking an experienced Production Cost Modeling Engineer to support power market, resource planning, and transmission economic studies. This is a fully remote position.

The role will focus on developing, running, and analyzing production cost models to evaluate future power market conditions and system operations. The engineer will assess generation dispatch, transmission congestion, locational marginal prices, resource adequacy, and other market outcomes to help clients evaluate proposed generation, energy storage, transmission, and infrastructure investments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and run production cost models, including platforms such as GridView, to evaluate generation, storage, and transmission investment decisions.
  • Develop assumptions around future electricity demand, generation additions and retirements, fuel prices, technology costs, transmission expansion, and regulatory or market conditions.
  • Simulate power system operations on an hourly or sub-hourly basis under a variety of future market scenarios.
  • Evaluate generation dispatch, transmission congestion, locational marginal prices (LMPs), resource adequacy, reliability, emissions, and system operating costs.
  • Assess how changes in generation, storage, load, and transmission capacity may impact future power market conditions.
  • Develop and test scenarios related to the economics and operation of bulk electric systems.
  • Perform economic analyses designed to evaluate infrastructure investments, system costs, and supply-and-demand conditions.
  • Develop production cost modeling scenarios and translate technical outputs into clear findings and recommendations.
  • Prepare technical reports summarizing study methodologies, assumptions, results, and key market implications.
  • Perform additional transmission planning, market, or power system studies as required.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in a quantitative or power-industry discipline. Relevant backgrounds may include:
    • Electrical Engineering with a focus on power systems
    • Mathematics with power system or optimization experience
    • Economics with a focus on electricity markets or energy economics
  • Ph.D. or other advanced technical specialization is valued but not necessarily required.
  • Significant professional experience within the electric power industry, particularly in production cost modeling, resource planning, transmission planning, or electricity market analysis.
  • Extensive experience performing production cost and resource adequacy studies using tools such as GridView or comparable market simulation platforms.
  • Experience with transmission planning and power system analysis tools such as PSS®E and/or PSLF is strongly valued.
  • Strong understanding of wholesale electricity markets, generation economics, economic dispatch, transmission congestion, LMP formation, and resource adequacy.
  • Experience within CAISO/WECC or another major North American ISO/RTO market.
  • Familiarity with grid planning, electricity market operations, and market or regulatory policy.
  • Ability to interpret large and complex market datasets and translate model outputs into actionable conclusions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical and economic findings to clients and other stakeholders.

The Opportunity

This position offers the opportunity to work on complex market and grid planning assignments involving generation, energy storage, transmission infrastructure, resource adequacy, and wholesale power markets.

Projects may include forecasting market prices and congestion, evaluating proposed infrastructure investments, analyzing future generation portfolios, and assessing the economic implications of changing market and grid conditions.

The position is fully remote and offers competitive compensation and comprehensive employee benefits.
