Transmission Planning Project Manager
A growing power and energy consulting organization is seeking an experienced Transmission Planning Project Manager to lead complex transmission planning engagements for utility, developer, and grid operator clients.
This position combines technical transmission planning expertise, project management, client development, and team leadership. The successful candidate will oversee projects from initial scoping and proposal development through technical execution and final delivery, while serving as a senior resource to clients and junior engineers.
Key Responsibilities
Business Development
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with utilities, developers, ISOs/RTOs, and other power industry clients.
- Identify and pursue new transmission planning and power systems consulting opportunities.
- Lead proposal development, including preparation of scopes, budgets, schedules, and technical approaches.
- Work directly with clients to establish project objectives and support contract development and negotiations.
Project Management
- Manage transmission planning projects across scope, schedule, budget, quality, and client communication.
- Lead project risk assessment and mitigation activities.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary teams of engineers, analysts, and other technical professionals.
- Communicate project progress, financial performance, risks, and technical issues to clients and internal leadership.
- Ensure projects meet technical, commercial, and client expectations.
Technical Leadership
- Lead and support advanced power system studies, including:
- Steady-state and contingency analysis
- Transient stability
- Short-circuit analysis
- Voltage analysis
- Production cost modeling
- Apply NERC, FERC, ISO/RTO, and regional planning requirements to transmission planning activities.
- Perform or oversee power system modeling using tools such as PSS®E, PSLF, PowerWorld, PSCAD, EMTP/ATP, ETAP, Promod, or comparable platforms.
- Identify complex transmission system challenges and communicate practical recommendations to clients and project stakeholders.
Leadership & Mentorship
- Mentor and develop junior engineers and analysts in both technical and project management disciplines.
- Support internal initiatives focused on technical excellence, process improvement, and team development.
- Serve as a senior technical resource for transmission system planning and evaluation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Business, or a related discipline.
- Approximately 5+ years of relevant professional experience in transmission planning, power systems, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated experience managing technical projects, including scope, schedule, budget, and deliverables.
- Experience supporting consulting engagements involving transmission planning, power systems, distribution planning, grid modernization, or related infrastructure programs.
- Familiarity with utility, developer, ISO/RTO, or consulting environments.
- Strong understanding of project financials and general business principles.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to communicate effectively across technical, commercial, and executive stakeholders.
