Process Engineering Manager (Wastewater) - Water Infrastructure
A leading engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced Process Lead (Wastewater) to provide technical leadership across major municipal and industrial water projects. This is an opportunity to play a key role in the design, optimisation, and delivery of complex wastewater treatment facilities while leading multidisciplinary teams and driving innovation in process engineering.
The Role
As the Process Lead, you will act as the technical authority for wastewater treatment process design, supporting projects from concept development through detailed design, commissioning, and operational optimisation. You will work closely with clients, contractors, vendors, and internal engineering disciplines to deliver best-in-class treatment solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the process design of municipal and industrial wastewater treatment facilities.
- Develop and review treatment systems including:
- Screening and preliminary treatment
- Physical and chemical treatment processes
- Biological treatment systems
- Aeration and blower systems
- Odour control facilities
- Disinfection systems
- Sludge treatment and management solutions
- Design ancillary systems such as chemical dosing, ventilation, and drainage systems.
- Prepare and review Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), P&IDs, mass balances, and process calculations.
- Develop process equipment specifications and evaluate vendor proposals.
- Coordinate closely with civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation & control, and digital water teams.
- Facilitate technical workshops, HAZOP studies, and client engagement sessions.
- Support bids, proposals, and project pursuits.
- Develop testing and commissioning strategies and lead commissioning activities.
- Mentor and manage process engineers, providing technical oversight and QA/QC review.
- Evaluate emerging treatment technologies and incorporate innovative solutions into project delivery.
About You
- Degree qualified in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Approximately 20 years of experience in municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment process design.
- Strong technical expertise in biological treatment systems and process optimisation.
- Practical experience with wastewater process modelling software such as BioWin, GPS-X, SUMO, or similar platforms.
- Deep knowledge of treatment technologies including:
- Activated Sludge
- SBR
- MBR
- MABR
- MBBR / IFAS
- Experience preparing procurement specifications, PFDs, and P&IDs.
- Proven track record leading complex water infrastructure projects and multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and client-facing skills.
- Experience with advanced process control and digital or AI-enabled treatment solutions is advantageous.
