Project Engineer - Site Design

Role Overview

You'll lead design and plan production for general civil and site work across a varied project portfolio, covering site layouts, horizontal and vertical control, grading and drainage, paving, site utilities, and the associated permitting and approvals. This is a role with genuine breadth. You'll handle complex technical assignments while also managing client relationships, shaping proposals, and mentoring less experienced staff. Depending on experience, there is scope to carry direct reports and grow into a wider leadership position.

You'll report into the Regional Engineering Manager and work alongside planners, surveyors, architects, and technicians on a daily basis.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform engineering calculations in support of civil and site design projects
• Manage projects end to end, including client communication, public input, and internal coordination
• Produce and review design and drafting work in AutoCAD Civil 3D
• Lead and provide guidance on site investigations, survey work, CAD production, and data collection
• Prepare and review engineering designs, reports, calculations, and plan sets
• Oversee quality assurance, ensuring projects are delivered as designed and recommending modifications where needed
• Identify additional engineering and surveying services clients need, and draft proposals and fee estimates
• Coordinate with government agencies, client staff, and other professionals to secure design information and approvals
• Write and edit construction specifications and engineering reports
• Tabulate bid items, calculate construction quantities, and estimate construction costs
• Conduct periodic site visits during construction to monitor quality and progress
• Mentor and train junior engineers and technical staff

Education and Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program
• 5+ years of experience in civil engineering or construction
• Active Michigan P.E. license, or the ability to obtain one within 12 months
• Hands on proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D and Microsoft Office
• Broad civil engineering knowledge base rather than narrow specialization in a single area
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to lead client conversations
• Ability to plan and schedule work, and deliver assignments within agreed budgets and timelines
• Demonstrated capability to mentor and develop others
• Comfortable working within a multidisciplinary team
• Position is based in Kalamazoo with approximately 10 to 15% local travel
