Project Engineer - Water/Wastewater

San Francisco, CA | Full-Time | Mid-Senior Level

About Us

We are a civil and environmental engineering consultancy focused on sustainable infrastructure and resilient systems. Our team designs solutions for water management, green building, resource conservation, and climate-adaptive infrastructure for public and private clients around the world. Our portfolio includes large-scale urban water plans, waterfront revitalization projects, and major mixed-use developments recognized with industry awards. We're driven by a mission to build infrastructure that supports both communities and the environment.

The Opportunity

We're looking for a Project Engineer to join our Water/Wastewater group. In this role, you'll work alongside a multidisciplinary team of engineers to develop practical, well-engineered solutions for water, wastewater, and water reuse infrastructure challenges. You'll take ownership of technical scopes of work, help manage client relationships, and play a role in mentoring junior team members while keeping projects on track, on budget, and within scope.

This is a great fit for someone who enjoys technical depth, cross-team collaboration, and the chance to shape infrastructure that has a lasting environmental impact.

What You'll Bring

  • Roughly 6+ years of relevant industry experience
  • A Bachelor's degree in Civil and/or Environmental Engineering
  • Solid technical grounding in physical and chemical water/wastewater treatment processes, including water reuse
  • Hands-on experience across the full project lifecycle - conceptual design through construction administration
  • A track record of preparing technical reports, drawings, and presentations for clients and regulatory bodies
  • Experience advancing plan sets through all phases, including redlines for drafting teams
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for water/wastewater treatment plant design
  • Familiarity with process modeling/simulation tools (e.g., BioWin, GPS-X)
  • Working knowledge of SCADA and automated control systems
  • Experience with process/hydraulic calculations, cost estimating, P&IDs, process layouts, and piping diagrams
  • Strong ability to read and interpret technical design documents
  • Experience with treatment plant operations, pilot studies, sampling, and reporting
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills; comfortable managing multiple projects at once
  • Good judgment, independence, and solid communication and problem-solving skills

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience in a consulting environment
  • Comfort collaborating across civil, mechanical, and electrical disciplines
  • Exposure to advanced treatment technologies (membrane filtration, UV disinfection)
  • Familiarity with CA/US water and wastewater regulations and permitting
  • Hydraulic modeling experience (gravity and pressure networks)
  • Pump station design experience
  • Cost estimation experience for water/wastewater infrastructure
  • Familiarity with tools like Civil 3D, PCSWMM, or SewerCAD
  • A PE license
  • Sustainability credentials (LEED, Envision, Living Building Challenge, EcoDistricts)

What You'll Do

  • Lead the development of sustainable engineering solutions across process evaluation, facilities planning, design, permitting, and construction administration
  • Prepare and review calculations, design criteria, and technical memos
  • Coordinate with internal teams and subconsultants to deliver integrated designs
  • Support quality assurance/quality control across all project phases
  • Help plan, assign, and direct the work of design engineers
  • Contribute to training, mentoring, and performance development of team members
  • Bring fresh, innovative design approaches that improve efficiency
  • Ensure designs comply with current state and local regulations
  • Act as a key technical liaison between client teams and the consulting team
  • Work independently under general supervision while exercising sound engineering judgment

What We Offer

  • Employee ownership eligibility after one year
  • Flexible schedule, including every other Friday off
  • Competitive health plans (PPO/HMO options), plus dental and vision
  • Annual learning & development stipend
  • Generous PTO plus paid holidays
  • Automatic 401(k) enrollment
  • A collaborative, social team culture with regular events
  • The chance to do engineering work with real environmental impact
