Position Overview
An established engineering, consulting, and technical services organization supporting the power and energy industry is seeking a Senior Field Engineer to support a large-scale behind-the-meter microgrid project serving a hyperscale data center campus.
This position serves as the program team's primary on-site representative during construction, integrated commissioning, and energization activities. The individual will provide field oversight, monitor project execution, identify emerging risks, and communicate progress and issues to program leadership. This is an owner's representative/oversight role and does not include directing contractor means and methods, safety programs, or construction personnel.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide daily field oversight of substation, battery energy storage, microgrid, and power generation facility construction and commissioning activities.
- Monitor project progress and identify schedule, quality, and interface risks.
- Witness and track commissioning activities in accordance with approved testing and commissioning plans.
- Support energization activities, factory acceptance test follow-through, control system integration, black start testing, and functional performance testing.
- Assess readiness for key project milestones and commissioning-related submissions.
- Coordinate field interfaces among EPC contractors, equipment suppliers, and parallel project teams.
- Review contractor-reported quality and safety performance and escalate significant concerns to program leadership.
- Maintain daily reports, punch lists, deviation logs, turnover documentation, and photographic records.
- Provide timely and accurate written reporting to support project decision-making.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in field engineering, construction management, or commissioning within electrical infrastructure projects.
- Direct hands-on involvement in commissioning, energization, startup, and functional testing activities.
- Ability to interpret:
- Single-line diagrams
- Protection and control schematics
- Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs)
- Commissioning procedures
- Strong written communication and reporting skills.
- Ability and willingness to work a sustained on-site schedule for the duration of construction and commissioning activities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with medium- and high-voltage substation construction and commissioning.
- Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) experience.
- Knowledge of microgrid controls, islanded operation, and black start functionality.
- Data center electrical distribution and commissioning experience.
- Previous experience serving as an owner's representative, owner's engineer, or PMO-side field engineer.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent industry experience.
- PE, PMP, NETA, or commissioning-related certifications are considered a plus.
Location
This is a full-time, on-site position based at a project site in Texas. The role requires a consistent field presence during construction and commissioning and will involve extended work schedules typical of large-scale infrastructure projects.
