Senior Transportation Water Resources Lead

Senior Transportation Water Resources Lead

Fairfax, VA | Hybrid Flexibility

I'm working with a highly respected engineering consulting firm that is looking to add a senior-level Water Resources Engineer to its Northern Virginia team. This is a leadership opportunity for someone who enjoys solving complex drainage and hydraulics challenges, guiding technical teams, and playing a major role in the delivery of transportation infrastructure projects across Virginia.

The position offers the chance to lead high-impact transportation drainage programs, mentor engineers, and serve as a key technical resource on projects involving stormwater management, floodplain analysis, stream stability, permitting, and hydraulic design. The team already has a strong transportation presence and is looking for someone who can help continue growing and strengthening its water resources capabilities throughout the region.

Compensation: $160,000 - $240,000+ depending on experience

What You'll Be Doing

  • Lead hydrology and hydraulics efforts on major transportation and infrastructure projects
  • Oversee stormwater management, drainage, floodplain, and stream analysis studies
  • Provide technical leadership for project teams and review engineering deliverables
  • Manage project scopes, schedules, budgets, and client relationships
  • Lead the preparation of drainage reports, permit documents, plans, specifications, and cost estimates
  • Coordinate with transportation agencies, municipalities, and regulatory stakeholders
  • Guide flood studies, scour analyses, stream stability evaluations, and resiliency planning efforts
  • Mentor junior engineers and support team development
  • Assist with client development, proposals, and strategic project pursuits

What They're Looking For

  • Virginia PE license
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • 16+ years of experience in water resources, drainage, hydraulics, or transportation engineering
  • Strong experience delivering transportation-related water resources projects
  • Proven leadership experience managing technical teams and complex project delivery
  • Strong understanding of permitting, stormwater regulations, and transportation design requirements
  • Ability to build relationships with clients and agency stakeholders
  • Excellent communication and project management skills

Technical Experience Desired

  • Transportation drainage design
  • Hydrologic and hydraulic modeling
  • Stormwater management and BMP design
  • Floodplain and FEMA studies
  • CLOMR and LOMR coordination
  • Stream stability and scour analysis
  • Erosion and sediment control design
  • Hydraulic Engineering Circulars (HEC) methodologies
  • Regulatory permitting and agency coordination
  • Preparation of plans, specifications, quantities, and technical reports
  • HEC-RAS and other industry-standard modeling software

Why It's Worth Considering

  • Opportunity to lead the water resources and hydraulics effort on high-profile transportation projects
  • Strong backlog of infrastructure work across Northern Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic
  • Significant influence on technical direction, project delivery, and team growth
  • Established and collaborative engineering culture
  • Flexible work arrangements
  • Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits package
  • Clear path for continued leadership and practice growth

This would be an excellent fit for someone who has built a strong transportation water resources background and is looking for a role where they can combine technical expertise, project leadership, mentoring, and client engagement while helping shape the future of a growing transportation hydraulics practice.
