Structural Engineer

Structural Engineer Champaign, IL | Onsite | Full-Time | $80,000 to $120,000

Tired of designing the same building over and over?

This role is the opposite. My client is a long-established, female-owned engineering firm in Champaign with decades of history in the local market. They're growing a five-person structural team that works inside a larger engineering firm covering several disciplines.

In a single year, their structural work can take in a heavy manufacturing plant, a food and beverage facility, a tank farm, an apartment building, a hotel and a steam tunnel. There's also plenty of repair work, site visits and real client contact.

If you want ownership, variety and a team where your work actually gets noticed, read on.

Why this role stands out

  • Varied projects across industrial, commercial, healthcare, multifamily and residential work
  • You own projects from concept and proposal through to construction support
  • A small, close structural team backed by mechanical, electrical, controls and process engineers in the same office
  • Every new hire is assigned a mentor, with 30/60/90-day check-ins and annual reviews
  • The firm is adding more levels to its progression ladder, so the path up is getting clearer
  • Real room to get involved in business development if that interests you
  • Mostly local and regional travel, with very few overnights
  • A 12-minute average commute and Champaign living costs

What you'll be doing

  • Running structural analysis, calculations and design across a wide range of building and industrial projects
  • Designing in wood, masonry, concrete, precast, steel and aluminum
  • Preparing construction documents in AutoCAD (Revit is a plus)
  • Applying building codes, safety regulations and structural design standards
  • Supporting proposals, budgets, schedules and client communication
  • Working with architects, contractors, clients and in-house engineers from other disciplines
  • Going out to site for field observations, investigations, repair assessments and construction support
  • Assessing existing systems and recommending practical improvements to safety, reliability and performance

What you'll bring

  • A bachelor's degree in civil engineering with a structural emphasis, or a related discipline
  • 3+ years of structural engineering experience
  • Strong structural analysis and calculation skills
  • AutoCAD experience
  • A confident, client-facing manner and solid project management skills
  • The ability to work on your own and as part of a team with several disciplines
  • A valid driver's license

Nice to have

  • A master's degree in civil or structural engineering
  • PE or SE licensure, or EI/EIT and actively working towards it
  • RISA-3D, Revit or other structural design software
  • Industrial or repair experience
  • Experience working directly with architects and clients

Compensation and benefits

  • $80,000 to $120,000 base, depending on experience, licensure and technical expertise
  • Health, dental, vision, disability and life insurance
  • 401(k)
  • Paid holidays and vacation
  • Paid maternity benefits
  • Possible relocation assistance for the right candidate

Culture The office was described to me as very cohesive. Structural, mechanical and electrical engineers work closely day to day, and there's a social side too, with potlucks, pizza and the odd tailgate. It's onsite five days a week, so this suits someone who likes being in the room with their team.
