Overview
A well-established, nationally recognised engineering and consulting firm is seeking a Department Manager / Director of Civil Engineering to lead and grow its Civil/Site Land Development practice in the Greater Boston area.
This leadership role is responsible for the operational, financial, strategic, and business development performance of a multidisciplinary civil engineering team. The successful candidate will oversee project delivery, mentor staff, strengthen client relationships, and help drive continued growth throughout the Boston market and wider New England region.
The team works on a diverse portfolio of projects including mixed-use developments, commercial facilities, residential communities, industrial sites, sports and entertainment venues, and large-scale infrastructure projects.
Compensation: $170,000-$215,000+ DOE, plus bonus potential and comprehensive benefits.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and direction for a growing Civil/Site practice.
- Drive department profitability, utilisation, project quality, and client satisfaction.
- Lead business development initiatives and cultivate new client relationships throughout Massachusetts and New England.
- Oversee proposal development, contract negotiations, and project execution.
- Monitor financial performance, including forecasting, billing, collections, and backlog management.
- Collaborate with leadership to support recruiting, workforce planning, and succession planning initiatives.
- Mentor and develop engineering managers, project managers, and technical staff.
- Ensure appropriate resource allocation across projects to maximise efficiency and project success.
- Support cross-functional collaboration and identify opportunities to expand services with existing clients.
- Maintain a strong presence in the local market through professional organisations, networking, and industry involvement.
- Foster a culture of accountability, professional growth, safety, and operational excellence.
- Travel periodically throughout New England to support offices, clients, and project teams.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
- 15+ years of progressive experience within civil engineering, site development, or land development consulting.
- Proven leadership experience managing teams, operations, and financial performance.
- Strong understanding of land development projects within the Greater Boston market and broader New England region.
- Established client relationships and demonstrated business development success.
- Experience overseeing project delivery, budgets, staffing, and utilisation metrics.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and relationship-building skills.
- Strategic mindset with the ability to drive growth while maintaining technical excellence.
- Strong mentoring, delegation, and team development capabilities.
