Director of Commissioning Operations (NYC Metro Area)

Location: Greater NYC Metro Area (Exact location to be determined)
Compensation: $175,000 - $190,000 Base Salary + Bonus Eligible

About the Opportunity

A leading engineering and consulting firm is seeking a Director of Commissioning Operations to lead and grow its commissioning practice within the NYC Metro region. This is a strategic leadership role responsible for business development, team management, project execution, financial performance, and operational excellence.

The successful candidate will serve as both a leader and technical contributor, helping expand market presence while ensuring high-quality project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Business Leadership & Operations

  • Lead and manage all aspects of the regional commissioning business, including operations, personnel, project execution, business development, and profitability.
  • Serve as a working technical leader capable of supporting project execution as needed.
  • Drive strategic growth initiatives and support expansion of the commissioning practice.
  • Develop and implement processes and standards that improve quality, efficiency, and client satisfaction.
  • Monitor project financial performance, team utilization, and overall departmental profitability.
  • Lead business development efforts, client relationship management, and market expansion activities.
  • Oversee proposal development, fee estimation, and contract pursuits.
  • Analyze market trends and competitor activity to strengthen regional market position.
  • Promote adoption of emerging technologies and ongoing staff training initiatives.

Team Leadership

  • Recruit, hire, develop, and retain commissioning professionals.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to project teams.
  • Oversee field activities and resource allocation to ensure quality delivery and balanced workloads.
  • Foster strong client relationships that support repeat business and long-term partnerships.
  • Collaborate across internal departments to support organizational goals and project success.

Qualifications

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Strong leadership, strategic planning, and business development capabilities.
  • Proven financial management and operational oversight experience.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Experience leading and developing technical teams.
  • Strong client-facing and relationship management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field required.
  • Advanced degree (MBA or Master's) preferred.
  • Professional commissioning certification (AEE, BCA, ASHRAE, ACG, or equivalent) preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in engineering, construction, commissioning, or related fields, including leadership responsibilities.
  • Experience managing complex projects, budgets, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Construction or contractor-side experience is a plus.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or other industry certifications are advantageous.
