Mechanical Engineer
Position: Mechanical Engineer - Chemical Feed & Water Treatment Systems
Department: Mechanical Engineering
Reports To: Engineering Manager
Direct Reports: None
Position Summary: We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer with strong SOLIDWORKS design capabilities and familiarity with chemical feed, chemical dosing, pumping, and monitoring systems used in water and wastewater treatment. This position will be responsible for the mechanical design and development of engineered chemical feed systems, packaged equipment, skids, piping assemblies, and related components. The ideal candidate combines strong mechanical design skills with practical knowledge of pumps, piping, valves, instrumentation, materials, and the challenges associated with chemical handling and water-treatment applications. This is a hands-on engineering position for someone who enjoys taking a concept from application requirements through detailed design, fabrication, testing, and field implementation.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop mechanical designs and detailed drawings using SOLIDWORKS.
- Design chemical feed skids, pumping systems, piping assemblies, equipment packages, and related mechanical systems.
- Develop 3D models, assemblies, fabrication drawings, bills of material, and detailed manufacturing documentation.
- Select and specify pumps, valves, piping, fittings, tanks, tubing, supports, and other mechanical components.
- Design systems involving chemical dosing, metering, dilution, transfer, storage, and injection.
- Incorporate chemical compatibility, pressure, temperature, flow, material selection, and safety requirements into system designs.
- Work with electrical and controls engineers to properly integrate pumps, instrumentation, analyzers, flow meters, level devices, valves, and control components.
- Review customer specifications, process requirements, P&IDs, equipment specifications, and project documentation.
- Translate customer and application requirements into practical, manufacturable mechanical designs.
- Participate in design reviews and resolve design, fabrication, installation, and field issues.
- Work closely with manufacturing, purchasing, project personnel, suppliers, customers, and field personnel.
- Support prototype development, fabrication, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
- Identify opportunities to improve standardization, manufacturability, reliability, and cost.
- Maintain and improve engineering standards, design practices, drawings, and component libraries.
- Assist with technical support for sales and customers when engineering input is required.
- Provide practical engineering judgment when evaluating design alternatives, equipment selections, and field problems.
Technical Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline preferred.
Strong working proficiency with SOLIDWORKS, including:
- 3D part modeling * Assembly design * Detailed drawings * Sheet metal * Weldments * Configurations * Bills of material * Design revisions *
Experience designing mechanical equipment, skids, packaged systems, or industrial equipment. * Familiarity with chemical feed and monitoring systems used in water or wastewater treatment.
Working knowledge of: * Various chemical metering pumps ( Grundfos, ProMinent, Watson Marlow, LMI, Pulsafeeder etc. * Chemical metering and injection systems * Piping systems * Valves and fittings * Tanks and containment * Tubing systems * Pressure and flow considerations * Instrumentation and monitoring equipment * Industrial materials and chemical compatibility * Ability to read and understand P&IDs, mechanical drawings, equipment specifications, and process documentation. 3 * Familiarity with AutoCAD is a plus. * Experience with ERP/MRP systems and engineering documentation is a plus.
Desired Industry Experience
Experience in one or more of the following industries is highly desirable:
- Water and wastewater treatment
- Industrial water treatment Cooling Towers and Boiler Systems
- Chemical feed systems
- Chemical dosing equipment
- Pumping systems
- Process equipment
- Packaged/skid-mounted systems
- Industrial equipment manufacturing
- OEM equipment
- Municipal or industrial process systems
Problem-Solving & Engineering Skills The successful candidate should be able to move beyond simply producing drawings and understand why the system is being designed the way it is.
The position requires someone who can: * Understand the application and operating requirements. * Identify potential mechanical problems before fabrication. * Evaluate competing design approaches. * Make sound engineering decisions with incomplete information. * Recognize potential installation and maintenance issues. * Design for manufacturability and serviceability. * Communicate technical issues clearly to both technical and non-technical personnel. * Take ownership of a design from concept through completion. Cross-Functional Responsibilities This position will work closely with: * Sales and applications engineering * Project management * Manufacturing * Purchasing * Electrical and controls engineering * Quality * Suppliers * Customers and field personnel
The engineer is expected to be an active technical resource rather than simply a drawing resource.
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for an engineer who combines engineering knowledge, practical mechanical design experience, and an understanding of water-treatment equipment.
The ideal candidate is:
- Highly proficient in SOLIDWORKS.
- Comfortable designing real equipment rather than purely theoretical systems. * Familiar with pumps, piping, valves, and chemical feed equipment. * Detail-oriented without losing sight of the overall system. * A practical problem solver. * Comfortable communicating directly with customers, suppliers, and manufacturing personnel. * Able to work independently while collaborating effectively with a broader engineering and operations team. * Interested in improving designs and processes rather than simply repeating what has been done before. Position Level The position can be structured at the Mechanical Engineer, Senior Mechanical Engineer, or Mechanical Design Engineer level depending on the candidate's experience, technical capabilities, and familiarity with chemical feed and water-treatment systems. Key Success Measures * Success in this position will be demonstrated by: * High-quality, accurate SOLIDWORKS designs and documentation. * Designs that can be efficiently manufactured and assembled. * Reduced design errors and field problems. * Appropriate selection of pumps, materials, components, and mechanical equipment. * Timely completion of engineering work. * Successful transition of designs from engineering to manufacturing. * Effective resolution of customer and field issues. * Continued improvement and standardization of the company's engineered systems
