MEP Construction Manager (Owner's Representative)

Location: Nationwide travel required across the United States

Overview

The MEP Construction Manager acts as the owner's representative throughout the planning, construction, commissioning, and turnover phases of large-scale mission critical projects. This position is responsible for ensuring mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, controls, and supporting building systems are delivered in accordance with project requirements, schedule, budget, quality standards, and operational objectives.

The successful candidate will serve as a key liaison between owners, contractors, consultants, vendors, and commissioning teams while providing technical leadership and construction oversight throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

Construction Management & Owner Representation

  • Serve as the primary point of contact between project stakeholders, including contractors, consultants, trade partners, equipment suppliers, and operations teams.
  • Lead and participate in project coordination, owner-contractor meetings, and site readiness reviews.
  • Monitor project risks, identify potential issues, and develop mitigation strategies to maintain schedule, budget, and quality objectives.
  • Provide clear and concise progress reporting to project leadership and key stakeholders.

Design & Pre-Construction

  • Review MEP design documentation for constructability, maintainability, and operational effectiveness.
  • Support procurement activities for major mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Coordinate with project teams to ensure quality assurance, quality control, and commissioning requirements are incorporated early in the project lifecycle.
  • Participate in design coordination and clash resolution activities.

Field Construction Oversight

  • Monitor installation activities to ensure compliance with project specifications, codes, standards, and manufacturer requirements.
  • Verify MEP systems are installed according to approved drawings and coordinated construction plans.
  • Track project progress and support schedule recovery efforts when necessary.
  • Conduct site inspections and provide technical guidance throughout construction.

Safety & Operational Readiness

  • Support implementation of site safety programs and industry best practices.
  • Review critical procedures including shutdowns, energization plans, equipment tie-ins, and operational readiness activities.
  • Collaborate with project teams to ensure compliance with applicable safety and operational requirements.

Commissioning & Turnover

  • Oversee commissioning activities from equipment installation through integrated systems testing and final acceptance.
  • Coordinate closely with commissioning providers, vendors, and construction teams.
  • Ensure testing documentation, startup records, O&M manuals, and turnover packages are complete and accurate.
  • Track and drive resolution of punch list and commissioning-related issues.

Project Controls & Documentation

  • Maintain oversight of RFIs, submittals, change orders, testing records, and project documentation.
  • Utilize industry-standard project management and reporting platforms to track progress and communicate project status.
  • Produce regular reports covering schedule, quality, commissioning progress, and project risks.

Requirements

  • Experience managing MEP construction scopes on mission critical & data center projects.
  • Strong understanding of electrical, mechanical, and controls systems.
  • Knowledge of commissioning processes, system testing, and facility turnover procedures.
  • Ability to work directly with owners, contractors, consultants, and vendor partners.
  • Strong communication, coordination, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and common construction management software platforms.
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively and support remote project assignments for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working within data centers, mission critical facilities, or other highly technical environments.
  • Familiarity with commissioning processes from startup through integrated systems testing.
  • OSHA, NFPA 70E, or related safety certifications.
  • Experience with Procore, Bluebeam, BIM 360/ACC, MS Project, Primavera P6, or similar project tools.
