Senior PLC/SCADA Controls Engineer

About the Role
Our client is seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to join their growing automation team in Northern California. This position is ideal for a hands-on professional who enjoys developing control system solutions, working directly in the field, mentoring junior team members, and seeing projects through from design to commissioning.
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering PLC, HMI, and SCADA solutions for municipal and industrial projects while serving as a technical resource within the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, program, configure, and implement PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems.
- Support startup, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
- Develop control narratives, functional specifications, and testing procedures.
- Review hardware and software designs to ensure system performance and reliability.
- Troubleshoot instrumentation, field devices, and control systems.
- Assist with project planning, documentation, and cost estimating.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers and programmers.
- Collaborate with clients, project teams, and field personnel throughout project execution.
Desired Background
- Strong experience in industrial automation and control systems.
- PLC programming experience with platforms such as Allen-Bradley, Modicon, GE, or similar.
- Experience with HMI/SCADA software including FactoryTalk View, Wonderware, iFIX, Ignition, or comparable systems.
- Knowledge of industrial networking and communications.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, control schematics, and P&IDs.
- Hands-on troubleshooting and commissioning experience.
- Water/wastewater industry experience is a plus.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Qualifications
- Engineering degree, technical degree, or equivalent hands-on controls experience.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Comfortable working independently and within a team environment.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel occasionally.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
