Senior Environmental Engineer (PE)

A well-established environmental consulting firm is looking to add a Senior Environmental Engineer (PE) to its growing Environmental Services team. This organization has built a strong reputation supporting industrial and commercial clients across environmental compliance, engineering, and air quality programs, offering the opportunity to work on technically complex projects while maintaining direct client relationships and project ownership.

This position is ideal for an experienced Illinois-licensed Professional Engineer who enjoys a balance of technical engineering, environmental compliance, and client-facing consulting. While air quality work is an important component of the role, the ability to independently develop and certify engineering documents, particularly SPCC Plans, is a key requirement.

Working alongside a team of environmental and air quality specialists, you'll support a diverse portfolio of industrial clients while managing projects from inception through completion.

The Work

  • Serve as the lead engineer on environmental compliance and consulting projects for industrial and commercial clients
  • Prepare, review, and certify SPCC Plans and other engineering documents
  • Support air permitting, compliance evaluations, emissions calculations, and regulatory applicability determinations
  • Advise clients on federal, state, and local environmental regulations
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, deliverables, and client communication
  • Develop permit applications, technical reports, engineering evaluations, and regulatory submissions
  • Support compliance initiatives involving air, stormwater, wastewater, waste management, and remediation programs
  • Coordinate directly with regulatory agencies and support clients during inspections and compliance reviews
  • Conduct facility assessments and site visits to evaluate operations and environmental obligations
  • Collaborate with air quality specialists on Title V, NSPS, NESHAP, MACT, and related compliance programs
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff
  • Support proposal development, project scoping, and client relationship growth

Background They're After

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
  • Illinois Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • 7+ years of environmental engineering, consulting, or compliance experience
  • Experience developing and certifying SPCC Plans
  • Proven project management experience including budgets, schedules, and client deliverables
  • Experience working with industrial or commercial facilities
  • Familiarity with environmental compliance programs across multiple media
  • Strong technical writing and engineering problem-solving skills
  • Ability to independently manage projects and client relationships

Nice to Have

  • 10+ years of environmental consulting experience
  • Air permitting and air compliance experience
  • Familiarity with Clean Air Act permitting programs
  • Experience with Title V, NSPS, NESHAP, or MACT regulations
  • Emissions calculations and engineering analysis experience
  • Illinois environmental consulting background
  • OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification
  • Experience supporting manufacturing, chemical, utility, logistics, transportation, or energy-sector clients

Why It's Worth a Look

  • Join a respected environmental consulting practice with a strong technical reputation
  • Own projects from start to finish rather than supporting a small portion of the process
  • Work directly with clients as a trusted technical advisor
  • Opportunity to leverage both environmental engineering and air compliance expertise
  • Collaborative team environment with experienced environmental professionals
  • Diverse project portfolio across industrial and commercial sectors
  • Strong focus on technical consulting and project delivery rather than people management
  • Significant autonomy, client exposure, and long-term career growth opportunities
