Senior Industrial / DC Control Engineer

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to support the design, programming, and implementation of advanced microgrid and electrical grid control systems.

This is not a traditional industrial controls role focused primarily on controlling machinery. Instead, you will work on the systems responsible for managing how electrical power is generated, distributed, monitored, and delivered across complex facilities and infrastructure, including environments such as data centers and microgrids.

The role combines controls engineering, electrical utilities, real-time grid management, solution architecture, system integration, testing, and commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop controls for microgrid and electrical distribution systems

  • Develop architectures for real-time grid management and power control

  • Configure and integrate ADMS, DERMS, SCADA and EMS platforms

  • Program and configure PLCs, RTUs and HMIs

  • Integrate systems using protocols including:

    • DNP3

    • Modbus

    • SEL Fast Messaging

    • Mirrored Bits

  • Develop control panel designs using AutoCAD and/or EPLAN

  • Support factory testing, field testing, commissioning and system start-up

  • Troubleshoot complex electrical and controls integration issues

  • Develop technical estimates and support project planning

  • Coordinate and provide technical direction to junior engineers and technicians

  • Work directly with customers and project teams to develop effective grid-control solutions

  • Travel to project and customer sites approximately 25%

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Controls Engineering or a related discipline

  • 5+ years of relevant experience, or 3+ years with a Master's degree

  • 5+ years working with electric utilities or electrical power systems

  • Strong experience with real-time grid management

  • Experience designing and implementing control-system or solution architectures

  • Working knowledge of SCADA, ADMS, DERMS and/or EMS

  • Strong PLC, RTU and HMI programming/integration experience

  • Understanding of electrical distribution and grid-control environments

  • Experience with factory testing, field testing and commissioning

Relevant Technology Experience

Experience with one or more of the following platforms is highly desirable:

  • Siemens Spectrum Power

  • ABB MicroSCADA

  • GE PowerOn / Grid Solutions / Vernova

  • Schneider Electric EcoStruxure

  • OSIsoft PI

  • Honeywell SCADA

  • Oracle NMS

  • Eaton CYME

  • AspenTech / OSI Monarch

  • PcVue

  • Ignition

Preferred Experience

  • Previous solution architecture leadership

  • Experience leading or coordinating junior engineers and technicians

  • Data center, microgrid, utility or mission-critical infrastructure experience

  • Controls estimating and proposal support experience

  • Experience taking projects from initial design through commissioning and final handover

What Makes This Role Different?

Rather than simply programming controls for an individual machine or manufacturing process, you will help develop the control architecture behind an electrical microgrid.

The focus is on ensuring power can be intelligently monitored, controlled and distributed from where it is generated to where it needs to be consumed, making this particularly relevant to modern data center, utility and critical-power infrastructure projects.
