Senior Power Systems Engineer

Overview

A growing transmission infrastructure organization is seeking a Senior Power Systems Engineer to support high-voltage transmission and substation assets, rotating equipment facilities, reliability initiatives, outage planning, and operational engineering activities. This individual will serve as a key technical resource for both day-to-day operations and long-term asset performance, partnering closely with system operators, engineering teams, field personnel, and external reliability stakeholders within the Texas power market.

The position is responsible for troubleshooting equipment and system issues, supporting operational decision-making, maintaining network and outage models, developing operating procedures, and improving cross-functional coordination processes.

Key Responsibilities

Asset Performance & Reliability

  • Provide engineering support for large rotating equipment installations and associated balance-of-plant systems.
  • Develop preventative maintenance programs and long-term reliability strategies.
  • Lead equipment incident investigations and perform root cause evaluations.
  • Support commissioning, testing, and energization activities for new facilities and major upgrades.
  • Review vendor documentation, equipment specifications, and testing records.
  • Evaluate asset condition and develop risk-based maintenance recommendations.
  • Assist with spare parts planning and equipment lifecycle management.
  • Provide technical support during major outages and restoration efforts.

Operations Engineering

  • Support real-time system operations during abnormal conditions and emergency events.
  • Serve as a technical resource for operating personnel regarding system performance, voltage concerns, equipment behavior, protection system events, and alarm investigations.
  • Act as a liaison between operations, planning, and engineering functions.
  • Support compliance with regional transmission operating requirements and reliability standards.
  • Review operational notices and coordinate technical responses as needed.
  • Maintain and update operational procedures and associated documentation.
  • Partner with SCADA and controls teams to investigate alarm functionality, improve system visibility, and identify enhancement opportunities.
  • Coordinate with departments including IT, compliance, construction, engineering, planning, and regulatory affairs.
  • Review relay event reports alongside protection and controls teams.
  • Participate in design reviews for new transmission and substation projects, providing operational input and recommendations.
  • Develop technical operating guidelines and best practices.
  • Represent the organization in industry and stakeholder working groups.
  • Support outage planning activities, operational studies, and maintenance coordination efforts.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.

Required Experience

  • 5+ years of experience supporting transmission system operations, transmission engineering, generation engineering, or closely related power system functions.
  • Experience with high-voltage substation equipment and transmission assets.
  • Strong troubleshooting and equipment failure investigation experience.
  • Background performing root cause analysis and reliability assessments.

Preferred Experience

  • Familiarity with Texas power market operating practices and reliability requirements.
  • Experience working with transmission modeling, outage coordination, or network model management processes.
  • Knowledge of power system analysis and simulation tools.
  • Experience supporting large rotating machinery such as synchronous condensers or similar equipment.
  • Familiarity with transformers, breakers, protective relays, and control systems.
  • Experience supporting commissioning and startup activities.
  • Exposure to generation control platforms and plant control systems.

Certifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience working with asset management, outage management, modeling, or operational systems.
  • Knowledge of power system analysis software and network modeling tools.
  • Ability to create technical reports, presentations, charts, and operational documentation.

Core Competencies

  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Effective time management and prioritization.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics and protection/control drawings.
  • Understanding of AC and DC system diagrams.
  • Familiarity with protective relaying concepts and relay operation.
  • General knowledge of substation monitoring and SCADA environments.
