Structural Project Manager
Location: Cincinnati, Ohio
Salary: $100,000-$160,000+ depending on experience
Bonus: Additional performance-based compensation
Working arrangement: Primarily office-based, with flexibility considered
Experience: Ideally 5+ years
The Opportunity
A well-established and growing structural engineering consultancy in Cincinnati is looking to add an experienced Structural Engineer / Senior Structural Engineer to its team.
This is not a role where an engineer will simply review calculations, delegate production work, or spend the majority of their time managing people.
The firm is looking for someone who still enjoys engineering.
The successful engineer will remain technically involved in projects while taking increasing responsibility for project delivery, client interaction, mentoring younger engineers, and solving complex structural problems.
The company has a team of approximately 20 professionals and is deliberately open-minded on seniority. The priority is finding a technically strong, driven structural engineer who wants to take ownership of their work and continue progressing.
What Will They Work On?
The project portfolio is unusually varied and offers exposure to both new construction and complex existing structures, including:
- Multi-story steel-framed buildings
- 4 to 5-story wood-framed multifamily developments
- High-rise and mid-rise structures
- Industrial facilities
- Schools and educational buildings
- Hotels
- Retail and commercial developments
- Historic renovations and adaptive reuse
- Structural stabilization and retrofit projects
- Steel connection engineering
- Shoring, cold-formed steel and delegated structural design
Approximately 50% of the firm's work is new construction, with around 30% focused on renovations, stabilization and retrofit projects, and the remaining 20% involving delegated and specialty design.
The firm has also developed extensive experience restoring and adapting existing buildings throughout Cincinnati, including significant work in the Over-the-Rhine area. The firm's website specifically highlights historic restoration and adaptive reuse as areas of specialist expertise.
The Role
Depending on experience, the engineer will be responsible for:
- Structural analysis and design across steel, concrete, wood and other structural systems
- Managing multiple structural projects from concept through construction
- Producing and reviewing calculations and technical documentation
- Developing practical, constructible structural solutions
- Working directly with architects, contractors, fabricators and project stakeholders
- Supporting renovation, retrofit and existing-building projects
- Providing engineering support during construction
- Mentoring and developing junior engineers
- Remaining hands-on with design and production, even at senior level
- Taking increasing ownership of projects and client relationships as they progress
There is no expectation that someone joins with a book of business. The emphasis is on technical capability, project delivery and long-term development.
What Are They Looking For?
The firm is flexible on exact background and years of experience, but would ideally like someone with:
- 5+ years of structural engineering experience
- Experience with vertical building structures
- A background in consulting structural engineering
- Exposure to steel, concrete and/or wood-framed structures
- Experience taking projects through design and construction
- Strong technical problem-solving ability
- The ability to independently manage projects
- An interest in mentoring less experienced engineers
- Working knowledge of RISA
- Strong Excel capabilities
- Experience with Revit would be beneficial
- PE licensure, or progress toward licensure, preferred depending on experience
Most importantly, they want an engineer who is motivated, technically curious and comfortable being hands-on.
Why Consider It?
This opportunity would suit someone who likes the technical side of engineering but wants more responsibility and influence than they may receive within a large corporate consultancy.
The environment is designed around engineers being close to the entire project rather than working on one isolated part of the design.
The firm's public philosophy emphasizes practical design, constructability and close collaboration with architects and contractors, with the team remaining involved from initial structural strategy through construction support.
For the right person, this offers:
- Exposure to a genuinely varied structural portfolio
- Both new design and existing-building engineering
- Complex renovation and adaptive reuse work
- Significant project ownership
- Direct interaction with clients and contractors
- The opportunity to mentor younger engineers while remaining technical
- A smaller environment where individual engineers can have a visible impact
- Long-term career progression and potential ownership opportunities
- Flexibility depending on experience and circumstances
Compensation
Compensation will depend heavily on experience and capability rather than fitting candidates into a narrow salary band.
As a guide:
- 5-8 years: $95,000 - $120,000 base
- Highly experienced engineers with approximately 12+ years: packages can reach $150,000+
The firm is prepared to look across the experience spectrum for someone who can bring genuine technical value to the team.
Location
Cincinnati, OH
The preference is for someone who can be part of the office environment regularly. However, there is some flexibility for the right individual.
Interested?
This could be particularly interesting for a structural engineer who enjoys designing buildings, solving difficult existing-structure problems and actually seeing projects through, rather than moving entirely away from engineering as they become more senior.
The firm is actively interviewing and would like to bring the right person into the team as soon as possible.
