Substation Designer (Physical or Protection & Control)

Overview
A well-established engineering consulting firm supporting utility, transmission, distribution, and renewable energy clients is seeking Substation Designers with either Physical Design or Protection & Control (P&C) Design experience. This role offers the opportunity to work on a variety of substation projects ranging from distribution-level facilities to large EHV infrastructure projects supporting grid modernization and reliability initiatives across the United States.
Remote work is available for experienced candidates, with hybrid options available in several U.S. locations.
Key Responsibilities
Depending on your background, responsibilities may focus on Physical Design, Protection & Control Design, or a combination of both disciplines.
Physical Design Responsibilities
- Develop substation physical design packages for projects ranging from approximately 34.5kV through 500kV+.
- Produce and modify:
- General arrangement drawings
- Electrical plans and elevations
- Grounding plans and details
- Conduit and duct bank layouts
- Trench plans and cable routing drawings
- Equipment layouts and structure plans
- Support engineering calculations and design development activities.
- Apply utility standards, industry codes, and client requirements to design deliverables.
- Review vendor drawings and equipment submittals for design compliance.
- Participate in field assessments and site visits to support project execution.
Protection & Control Responsibilities
- Develop protection and control design packages for substation projects up to EHV voltage levels.
- Prepare:
- One-line and three-line diagrams
- Protection schematics
- Wiring and interconnection drawings
- Relay and control panel layouts
- SCADA, RTU, HMI, and communication system drawings
- Station battery and DC system designs
- Assist with relay and control equipment documentation and material lists.
- Evaluate existing facilities and drawings to support upgrades and new installations.
- Support quality reviews and design verification activities.
Required Qualifications
- 2+ years of substation, transmission & distribution, or electrical design experience.
- Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar design platforms.
- Knowledge of medium-, high-, and extra-high-voltage substation systems.
- Familiarity with industry standards including NESC, NEC, IEEE, and related utility design practices.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage tasks within project schedules and budgets.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting utility, consulting, EPC, or power delivery projects.
- Background in either substation physical design or protection & control design.
- Knowledge of substation construction, commissioning, or field engineering activities.
- Experience with 3D modeling and advanced design tools.
- Familiarity with utility client standards and engineering workflows.
