Position Overview
We are seeking a Mid-Level Substation Engineer to support the design and execution of electric utility and power delivery projects across the United States. This position is open to engineers with experience in Substation Physical Design, Protection & Control (P&C) Design, or a combination of both disciplines.
The successful candidate will work on projects ranging from distribution and transmission substations to renewable energy interconnections, data center infrastructure, and utility modernization initiatives. This role offers a flexible hybrid work environment with opportunities for technical growth, project ownership, and collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
Physical Design Engineers
- Develop substation physical design packages for utility, industrial, renewable, and EPC clients.
- Prepare equipment layouts, grading plans, grounding plans, conduit and cable routing drawings, elevations, and plan-and-profile drawings.
- Perform equipment selection and specification activities.
- Coordinate designs with civil, structural, transmission, distribution, and project teams.
- Support construction, installation, and design review activities as required.
Protection & Control Engineers
- Develop protection and control design packages for transmission and distribution substations.
- Prepare one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and cable schedules.
- Select and apply protection relays and substation automation equipment.
- Support relay replacement, greenfield, brownfield, and modernization projects.
- Coordinate with utility clients, field personnel, and internal engineering teams throughout project execution.
General Responsibilities
- Deliver engineering work in accordance with client standards, industry codes, and project schedules.
- Participate in project planning, design reviews, and technical discussions.
- Support proposal development and engineering estimates when needed.
- Mentor junior engineers and designers.
- Maintain strong communication with clients, project managers, and other stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- 3-8+ years of experience in substation engineering.
- Experience with substation physical design, protection & control design, or both.
- Understanding of transmission and distribution substation systems.
- Knowledge of applicable industry standards and utility practices.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a hybrid team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain.
- Experience with substations ranging from 4kV through 500kV+.
- Familiarity with utility, consulting, EPC, or owner-operator environments.
- Experience using common substation engineering software and design tools.
- Exposure to renewable energy, battery storage, data center, or industrial power projects.
- Experience leading small projects or serving as a technical lead for engineering tasks.
