BAS Design Engineer
About the Opportunity
A leading Building Automation and Controls organization is seeking a Senior BAS Hardware Engineer to join its growing engineering team. This position offers the opportunity to work on large-scale commercial and industrial automation projects, designing Building Automation Systems (BAS) from concept through implementation.
The ideal candidate will have a strong HVAC controls background, experience with DDC systems, and the ability to develop control hardware designs, wiring schematics, sequences of operation, and project documentation.
Key Responsibilities
- Design Building Automation Systems (BAS) using project specifications and construction drawings
- Create control schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and shop drawings
- Develop sequences of operation and coordinate with programming teams
- Produce bills of materials and system architecture designs
- Review project documents and identify design gaps, conflicts, or RFIs
- Support field technicians and subcontractors during installation and commissioning
- Maintain project documentation, record drawings, and engineering standards
- Participate in project turnover meetings with sales and project teams
- Establish and maintain customer-specific design standards
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance when needed
Required Qualifications
- Associate's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field, OR equivalent BAS/DDC experience
- Experience designing HVAC controls, DDC, PLC, or Building Automation Systems
- Strong understanding of low-voltage electrical systems and controls wiring
- Knowledge of commercial HVAC systems and control theory
- Ability to read and interpret construction documents, plans, and specifications
- Experience supporting field installation and commissioning activities
Preferred Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline
- Experience with BAS platforms such as Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell, Trane, Distech, Schneider Electric, or Tridium Niagara
- Familiarity with BACnet, Modbus, and third-party system integrations
- Knowledge of building networks and automation architectures
- Programming experience within BAS or PLC environments
