DDC Construction Sales Executive - Building Automation & HVAC Controls (Detroit, MI Area)
About the Role
We are seeking an Account Executive / Account Manager based in the Detroit, Michigan area (within approximately a 1-hour commute) to drive business growth and manage client relationships within the building automation and HVAC controls market.
This role is responsible for developing new business opportunities while maintaining and expanding relationships with existing clients. The ideal candidate has experience in BAS, controls, or HVAC systems and understands how to position technical solutions to meet customer needs.
You will collaborate closely with engineering, project management, and field teams to ensure successful project delivery and long-term customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
Business Development & Sales
Identify, develop, and pursue new business opportunities within commercial and light industrial markets.
Build and maintain a strong pipeline of BAS and HVAC controls projects.
Prepare proposals, estimates, and presentations tailored to client requirements.
Attend client meetings, site visits, and networking events to promote services.
Negotiate contracts, pricing, and project scopes in alignment with company objectives.
Account Management & Client Relations
Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned accounts.
Develop and maintain long-term relationships with owners, operators, contractors, and consultants.
Understand client needs and recommend appropriate automation and control solutions.
Ensure a high level of customer satisfaction through proactive communication and follow-up.
Identify opportunities for upgrades, retrofits, and service agreements within existing accounts.
Project Coordination & Support
Work closely with internal engineering and project teams to transition awarded projects smoothly.
Support project execution by ensuring scope alignment, expectations, and timelines are clearly defined.
Assist in resolving commercial or relationship challenges during project delivery.
Stay involved throughout the project lifecycle to ensure client expectations are met.
Market Awareness & Strategy
Maintain awareness of local market trends, competitor activity, and emerging technologies.
Provide feedback to internal teams to improve offerings and market positioning.
Support development of sales strategies and account growth plans.
Qualifications
3-7+ years of experience in sales, account management, or business development within BAS, HVAC, or controls-related industries.
Strong understanding of building automation systems, HVAC equipment, and control solutions.
Proven ability to develop new business and manage client relationships.
Experience preparing proposals, estimates, and project scopes.
Strong communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
Ability to work independently and manage a sales pipeline effectively.
Comfortable working with technical teams and translating solutions into customer value.
Proficiency with CRM tools and Microsoft Office Suite.
Valid driver's license and ability to travel locally.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working for a controls contractor, mechanical contractor, or systems integrator.
Experience with estimating, including takeoffs, cost development, and proposal pricing for controls or HVAC projects.
Established relationships within the Detroit-area construction, facilities, or engineering market.
Familiarity with BAS platforms (e.g., Niagara, Distech, Siemens, Johnson Controls, Trane, etc.).
Understanding of service agreements, retrofits, and energy efficiency projects.
Work Location & Travel
Must be based within Detroit, MI or within approximately a 1-hour commuting distance.
Primarily local travel within the Detroit metro area for client meetings and site visits.
Occasional regional travel may be required.
