HVAC Controls Engineer - Building Automation

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Overview

The HVAC Controls Engineer will be responsible for designing temperature control and building automation systems for commercial facilities. This position will work closely with project managers, engineers, and other project stakeholders to develop accurate control drawings and complete design packages.

The role involves reviewing electrical power requirements, control panels, relay logic, wiring, and control devices associated with HVAC, lighting, access control, and CCTV systems. The successful candidate may also support software engineering, controls programming, system networking, and communications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce building automation system layouts and controls designs based on construction documents.
  • Develop design submittals, as-built drawings, and operations and maintenance documentation.
  • Review mechanical, electrical, and architectural drawings to determine project requirements.
  • Obtain equipment cut sheets and coordinate the submittal process.
  • Assemble operations and maintenance packages.
  • Ensure designs comply with contract drawings, project specifications, and applicable requirements.
  • Review designs for completeness, accuracy, and constructability.
  • Select appropriate controllers, sensors, actuators, control panels, and field devices for each application.
  • Develop control panel layouts, wiring diagrams, relay logic, and equipment schematics.
  • Cross-check electrical power requirements and control system details.
  • Produce custom graphical interfaces for building automation systems.
  • Collaborate with project managers and engineering teams throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support controls programming, system networking, and communications when required.
  • Manage multiple design priorities while meeting project deadlines.

Qualifications

  • Experience designing control systems for commercial HVAC or building automation applications.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and architectural construction documents.
  • Experience using computer-aided design software.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Visio.
  • Understanding of DDC controls, electrical wiring, control panels, relay logic, and field devices.
  • Knowledge of HVAC equipment and temperature control applications.
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, or a related field is preferred.
