An established engineering consulting firm is seeking an experienced Highway Design Team Leader to join its transportation practice. This position offers the opportunity to lead roadway design projects, mentor developing engineers, and contribute to the growth of a collaborative transportation team. The successful candidate will oversee project delivery, provide technical leadership, and play a key role in advancing transportation infrastructure projects throughout New York State and New York City.
Position Overview
The Highway Design Team Leader will be responsible for managing roadway and transportation engineering projects from planning through final design. This role involves leading multidisciplinary teams, guiding junior staff, coordinating with clients and agencies, and ensuring the successful delivery of transportation improvement projects. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in roadway geometry, pavement design, utility coordination, and transportation design standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee the development of roadway and highway design projects.
- Manage the preparation and review of engineering calculations, technical reports, and design documentation.
- Direct the development of construction drawings, specifications, and bid packages.
- Oversee project cost estimating and budgeting efforts.
- Review shop drawings, technical submittals, and contractor requests during construction.
- Conduct site visits to gather field data and assess existing conditions.
- Provide engineering support during construction and assist in resolving field-related issues.
- Present technical information to clients, public agencies, stakeholders, and project teams.
- Assist with proposal development, client relationship management, and business development initiatives.
- Mentor and train engineering staff, fostering their professional growth and technical development.
- Ensure compliance with applicable engineering standards, regulations, and quality control procedures.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining schedules and quality expectations.
- Serve as a technical resource for transportation engineering staff and project managers.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in New York State required.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in roadway and transportation engineering.
- Demonstrated experience leading project teams and managing transportation design projects.
Technical Requirements
- Strong proficiency with Civil 3D and OpenRoads Designer.
- Experience with transportation projects for agencies such as NYSDOT, NYCDOT, NYSTA, and NYC DDC.
- Working knowledge of AASHTO design criteria, roadway geometric design principles, and roadside safety standards.
- Familiarity with FHWA guidelines and transportation engineering best practices.
- Understanding of roadway drainage, utility coordination, pavement design, and highway safety requirements.
