Principal Substation Engineering Manager

Join a specialist engineering team delivering complex substation and grid infrastructure programmes across the United States. This senior position offers the opportunity to lead multidisciplinary teams, influence major project decisions and work directly with utility and technology-focused clients supporting rapidly growing sectors such as data centres, advanced manufacturing, renewable energy and energy storage.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the engineering delivery of large-scale substation and switchyard projects from early design through construction support
  • Take technical responsibility for complex project deliverables, calculations, equipment specifications and material selections
  • Develop project execution plans covering scope, programme, budget, resourcing and quality
  • Coordinate civil, structural, electrical, protection and controls disciplines to ensure an integrated design
  • Direct engineering production teams and review work completed by less experienced engineers
  • Provide technical guidance on substation layouts, major equipment, protection and control systems, and associated civil and structural elements
  • Identify project risks, resolve technical challenges and maintain delivery against agreed milestones
  • Work closely with clients to understand their commercial and technical priorities
  • Manage design changes and communicate their impact on scope, cost and schedule
  • Support proposals, fee estimates and new project pursuits
  • Contribute to recruitment, team development and day-to-day people management

Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited institution
  • At least 11 years of relevant engineering experience
  • Strong background delivering substation or switchyard projects for US investor-owned utilities
  • Experience within EPC delivery, multidisciplinary design consultancy or both
  • Detailed understanding of the full substation project lifecycle
  • Knowledge of substation layout development, equipment selection, protection and controls, and civil or structural design coordination
  • Advanced understanding of relevant engineering standards, design principles and industry guidance
  • Experience managing engineering budgets, schedules, resources and quality requirements
  • Familiarity with procurement, contract administration, proposals and engineering cost estimates
  • Confident client-facing communication and relationship-management skills
  • Professional Engineer licence strongly preferred, or a clear pathway towards obtaining appropriate registration
