Our client, a respected local Florida small to mid-sized engineering firm, is seeking an experienced, licensed Traffic Engineer to join and lead the team in either Tampa or Orlando. This is a permanent opportunity for a seasoned professional with 10+ years of experience delivering transportation and traffic projects for FDOT or local cities and counties, who can also play a key role in winning work and strengthening local business development connections.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage a portfolio of traffic and transportation engineering projects across the Tampa or Orlando market, from proposal through design and delivery.
Serve as project manager and/or technical lead on FDOT and local municipality (city and county) projects, including scope development, budgeting, scheduling, and client communication.
Coordinate and oversee traffic studies (e.g., traffic impact analyses, operational analyses, safety studies, signal warrant studies) and ensure methodologies align with FDOT and local standards.
Direct and review the preparation of plans, reports, and technical documentation, including traffic signal plans, signing and pavement marking plans, ITS plans, and maintenance of traffic (MOT/TTC) plans.
Collaborate closely with FDOT and local governments to secure approvals, manage reviews, and address comments, maintaining strong working relationships with agency staff.
Support and drive business development by identifying opportunities, leading or contributing to proposal preparation, and participating in shortlist interviews and presentations.
Leverage existing local relationships with FDOT districts, cities, and counties to win new projects and expand the firm's presence in Central Florida.
Mentor and guide junior and mid-level engineers, providing technical oversight, training, and career development support.
Ensure projects comply with applicable codes, standards, and guidelines, including FDOT Design Manual, FDOT Traffic Engineering Manual, MUTCD, and local ordinances.
Contribute to strategic planning for the traffic/transportation group, including workload forecasting, resource planning, and service-line growth.
Skills and Experience
Licensure & Education:
Professional Engineer (PE) license in Florida, in good standing.
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline; a master's in transportation engineering is a plus.
Experience Level:
Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible experience in traffic and transportation engineering.
Substantial experience delivering projects for FDOT and/or Florida cities and counties, ideally within the Tampa and Orlando regions.
Transportation & Traffic Engineering Expertise:
Demonstrated experience in traffic operations, traffic safety, corridor studies, and intersection analyses.
Hands-on experience with traffic modeling and analysis tools (e.g., Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, VISSIM or similar).
Experience preparing and reviewing traffic impact studies, signal timing plans, and operational improvement recommendations.
Knowledge of roadway design principles and how traffic engineering integrates with geometric design and complete streets concepts.
Engineering & Project Management Background:
Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, including budgets, schedules, and multi-disciplinary coordination.
Strong technical writing skills for reports, studies, and documentation submitted to FDOT and local governments.
Experience leading project teams, assigning tasks, and ensuring quality control/quality assurance (QC/QA) on all deliverables.
Business Development & Local Connections:
Track record of winning work with FDOT and/or Florida cities and counties, including leading or contributing to proposals and interviews.
Established relationships with key decision-makers and project managers within FDOT districts and local agencies in the Tampa/Orlando area.
Ability to identify upcoming opportunities, position the firm, and develop capture strategies for targeted pursuits.
Comfortable attending industry events, client meetings, and professional organizations to represent the firm and expand its network.
