Water Resources Assistant Project Manager

Our client is seeking an experienced Assistant Project Manager to join their growing Water Resources team in Trenton, NJ. This is an excellent opportunity for a licensed Professional Engineer looking to take the next step in their career, working on a diverse range of stormwater, floodplain, dam safety, and water resources projects across New Jersey.

The successful candidate will play a key role in managing and delivering projects involving hydrologic and hydraulic modelling, stormwater management design, flood hazard permitting, dam rehabilitation, and green infrastructure initiatives. You'll work closely with clients, regulatory agencies, and multidisciplinary project teams while helping oversee project delivery from proposal through design and permitting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support and lead water resources projects focused on stormwater management, flood mitigation, and infrastructure improvements.
  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses using industry-standard modelling software.
  • Design stormwater management systems and Best Management Practices (BMPs).
  • Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, plans, and permit applications.
  • Complete floodplain and flood hazard area studies using HEC-RAS and related software.
  • Support dam safety projects, including inspections, rehabilitation design, breach analyses, and hazard classification studies.
  • Coordinate with clients, regulators, and internal project teams to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Develop project scopes, fee estimates, and technical proposals.
  • Mentor junior staff and provide technical oversight where required.
  • Conduct occasional site visits to support design and project development efforts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required, preferably registered in New Jersey or able to obtain reciprocity.
  • 7+ years of experience in water resources engineering.
  • Strong experience with hydrologic and hydraulic modelling, stormwater design, and permitting.
  • Knowledge of floodplain management, watershed analysis, and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent communication, project coordination, and client-facing skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with NJDEP regulations and permitting requirements.
  • Proficiency with HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and related modelling and design software.
  • Experience with dam safety evaluations, rehabilitation projects, and breach analyses.
  • Knowledge of green infrastructure and low-impact development practices.
  • Previous project management or task management experience.
