The following denotes a typical week for a Sr. PM in the Geotechnical Engineering Department.
- Project Manager for on going Testing projects: PM typically is in charge of 2-4 current part-time to full time testing projects. Duties include: reviewing daily reports by Technician and forwarding to the Client, providing on-site visit(s) as required, updating Client/Project Team briefly on status, insuring our testing services are accurate and appropriate with compaction, concrete, steel, and/or fire proofing inspections. Prepare PE Certifications.
- Due Diligence Investigations: similar to a full geotechnical investigation/report, this typically entails a day or two of test pits on proposed sites in concept or sketch phase. General information on suitable soils, depth to water/rock, structural fill, marginal soils, approximate allowable bearing value (ABV) using field apparatus (DCP, DMCP) in the test pits, stake out the locations via cell phone. Lab samples, prepare PE Report.
- Geotechnical Investigations - complete soil and foundation report for non-residential projects. Typical projects are 5,000SF - 100,000 SF and 1 - 5 stories. PM is responsible for turn key scheduling, driller coordination, one calls, mark outs, field oversight, logging soils, lab coordination, report preparation, etc.
- Storm Water Testing: test pits and double ring infiltration testing in field, logging test pits, and preparing report for client. Typically working at the direction of the Civil Engineer of Record. Ability to utilize experience in field to alter testing locations and depths while coordinating with design engineer when testing in the field.
- Coring: roadway coring for traffic engineer with lab samples or DMCP testing for CBR values. Other coring entailing concrete for sub slab investigations/testing due to settlement or other reasons with reports required in attempt to resolve the matter.
- Laboratory interaction: They have a full-service, accredited soils and aggregate laboratory in house. They work closely with our Lab with respect to ancillary testing such as soil cement mixtures for subgrade remediation, amended soil mixes for BMPs to meet permeability and similar specifications, bentonite and soil testing to comply to key trench and clay core permeability requirements. PMs work closely with the Lab manager and take all of their own samples into the lab to log/schedule the appropriate tests required.
- Familiar with ASTM and ACI requirements relating to aggregate, mortar/concrete requirements as applicable
- 100% responsible for Managing Client Expectations from initial proposal to change orders to monthly invoices to project closure
- Software: familiar or competent with standard geotechnical software such as Microsoft office/excel, Teams, boring logging software (i.e. - Bentley giINT), soil structures or similar, familiar with autoCAD, blue beam
- Misc: retaining wall design, deep foundation design, steep slope analysis, dam seepage/global stability, scour analysis, clean fill testing. These items are occasional - a few times/year
