Location: Brooklyn, NY (Hybrid, Field-Based Position)
A growing environmental consulting and engineering firm is seeking an Asbestos Investigator to join its team in Brooklyn, NY. This is a primarily field-focused position supporting a variety of hazardous building materials projects throughout New York City and the surrounding region.
The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of asbestos regulations, experience conducting investigations and inspections, and the ability to work independently at active construction, renovation, and demolition sites. This opportunity offers exposure to a diverse portfolio of public and private sector projects, along with a flexible hybrid work environment.
Responsibilities
- Conduct asbestos inspections and investigations in commercial, institutional, healthcare, educational, and government facilities.
- Collect bulk samples of asbestos-containing materials, lead-based paint, PCB-containing materials, and other regulated building materials.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, sample location drawings, photographs, and supporting documentation.
- Interpret and apply applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including NYS Industrial Code Rule 56 (ICR 56) and NYC DEP Title 15.
- Coordinate with project teams, laboratory personnel, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
- Support projects involving renovations, demolitions, capital improvements, and facility management programs.
- File required asbestos notifications and documentation through applicable NYC DEP systems.
- Travel throughout the five boroughs and surrounding downstate New York region to support project needs.
Qualifications
- Current NYC DEP Certified Asbestos Investigator license (required).
- Current NYS DOL Asbestos Inspector certification.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience conducting asbestos inspections and hazardous materials investigations.
- Strong understanding of asbestos regulations, including NYS ICR 56 and NYC DEP Title 15.
- Familiarity with OSHA health and safety requirements.
- Experience preparing technical reports and inspection documentation.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently in field environments and manage multiple assignments.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for travel to project sites.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Occupational Health, or a related discipline.
- Additional certifications such as:
- Asbestos Project Monitor
- Asbestos Project Designer
- EPA Lead Inspector
- Lead Risk Assessor
- 40-Hour HAZWOPER
- Experience working on projects for municipal, institutional, healthcare, transportation, or higher education clients.
